Nicotrol Patches are a type of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). They help you avoid the discomfort of nicotine withdrawal symptoms when you quit smoking by giving you a controlled, sustained dose of nicotine. The symptoms of nicotine withdrawal can commonly include irritability, dizziness, mild depression, headaches, sleeplessness, and weight gain. These are part of the reason why it is so hard to quit smoking 'cold turkey' without any help. The patches each last 16 hours, are easy to use, and can be discreetly worn under clothing. The Nicotrol patch works to suppress your desire to smoke during the day, which is when you need it most. Each Nicotrol patch adheres externally to the skin and slowly releases a controlled level of nicotine. As you overcome the physical aspects of your addiction to nicotine you can focus on the behavioural aspects of your smoking habit. Nicotrol patches are a popular and effective option for those who want to stop smoking.

Nicotrol patches should be applied to dry, hairless skin for example on your upper arm or hip. The patches are available in 3 strengths, 15mg, 10mg and 5mg with each box containing 7 patches. Initially start with the 15mg or high dose patches first then after 8 weeks, gradually reduce your intake by swapping to the middle dose patch, or 10mg. However, if you smoke less than 20 cigarettes per day, start with the 10mg patches first. The middle dose patch should be used for a further 2 – 3 weeks after which time you should switch to the low dose patch, or 5mg. Once you have been using the low dose for 2 weeks, you should be able to stop using the patches completely.

Dosage

• Apply one Nicotrol patch in the morning either on the hip, the upper arm or the chest. Remove before retiring to bed at night.

Warnings and Cautions

• You should not use Nicorette Patches if you are under 18 years of age, are a non-smoker, pregnant or breastfeeding, recently suffered a stroke or heart attack. You should also refrain from using the patches if you have a history of heart disease or circulatory problems such as cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), heart palpitations or severe angina.
• You should consult your doctor or pharmacist before using if you suffer Nicorette Patches from high blood pressure, gastric or peptic ulcers, hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) kidney disease, liver disease, controlled angina or diabetes mellitus.
• You should also seek advice from a health professional if you are allergic to adhesive tape, have skin problems that predispose you to getting rashes, or you experience an allergic skin reaction to nicotine.
